The Scheldeprijs has the reputation of being the unofficial world championship for sprinters. Alexander Kristoff decided otherwise in 2022. As always, Zeeland provided the spectacle every cycling fan hoped for: echelons. The Norwegian Kristoff did not let himself be surprised, on the contrary. He opted for the breakaway and nestled himself into a leading group of 17 riders. With Bennett, Merlier and Philipsen, the leading group had plenty of fast men on board, including Kristoff. Yet, the Norwegian did not put his money on his sprinters legs. With an acceleration on the last passage over the Broekstraat, Kristoff got away alone to take his second victory in the Scheldeprijs, solo, 8 km later.

Record holder
With five wins in the Scheldeprijs, the German Marcel Kittel is the absolute record holder. In the Argos - Shimano jersey, Kittel first celebrated on the Churchillaan in Schoten at the age of just 23. The next two editions would also be won by the ace sprinter. In 2015, Kittel skipped the Scheldeprijs, before winning again in 2016 and 2017. The German competed in the unofficial world sprinters’ championship eight times in his career and was victorious five times.
