Unexpected success for Tom Timmermans

After a closed race, the 13th Memorial Staf Segers (the introduction race for the 107th Scheldeprijs) ended in a mass sprint. In an close sprint between Tom Timmermans and Benjamin Verraes, the Van Eyck Sport rider took the victory. "A totally unexpected success", he told DirectVelo.

After first crashing on the paved part of the Broekstraat, the 22-year-old Tom tells his story. "I remained calm and was able to join the peloton again. I was lucky that the group remained compact for most of the race, but at that moment I didn't think I would have a chance of winning", he said.


The best youngster of the Belgian cup two years ago, found the ultimate opening while facing the race favorite Benjamin Verraes. "In the last kilometer I was still confined, but gradually I was able to move-up and and able to overtake everyone on the left side of the peloton. At the finish I just had the necessary power for the ultimate jump."

On Sunday in Wieze (Lebbeke), the fourth in the IWT Oetingen classifications, is expected to defend his yellow leader's jersey of the "Lotto Cup of Belgium for Elite z/c and U23".
