Robbie McEWEN
How it looked like… 10 years ago! 2002 152 riders start in the event and while entering the last lap, five riders (Bart Leysen, Allan Bo Andresen, Voskamp, Andy Cappelle en Pronk) are still 38’’ ahead of the bunch. They are caught at only 3 km from the finishing line. As soon as it is done, Mapei-Quick Step starts preparing the sprint for Tom Steels. But Robbie McEwen is faster than Tom and the Australian rider wins his tenth race of the season. One more on his long list of wins! Result (Wednesday, April 24) 1. Robbie McEwen...
Wilfried NELISSEN
How it looked like… 20 years ago! 1992 With amongst others world champion Gianni Bugno at the start in Schoten, the 173-riders bunch is made up of very good riders. The race is a very fast one and massive sprint cannot be avoided. Johan Museeuw gives for a long time the impression nobody is able to defeat him but in the last meters, Wilfried Nelissen takes the advantage. 21 years old rider from Limburg wins his first top race. Result (Wednesday April 22) 1. Wilfried Nelissen, 204 km in 4h42m (44,250 km/h) 2. Johan Museeuw 3. Michel Cornelisse (Ned)...
Ludo SCHURGERS
How it looked like… 30 years ago! 1982 Not to coincide with the Football World Cup, the Tour 1982 finishes on July 25. The day after the criterium period is launched. The Scheldeprijs was supposed to be organized on Tuesday 27, which was a problem as the Criterium of Ronse was planned on the same day. The Scheldeprijs organizers deny postponing their event as it is linked to the local feast in their city. What they do however is to cancel the big lap. The event is raced on the small laps only. 62 riders take the start and...
Eddy MERCKX
How it looked like… 40 years ago! 1972 Eddy Merckx attacked and attacked again, all day through, in this rainy Scheldeprijs. He is caught at 10 km from the finish after his fifth attempt. Godefroot, Vanspringel, Verbeeck and other riders like De Witte chased indeed very hard to try and catch him. It looks like a sprint will end the race. But Eddy definitely wants to win! He attacks again at 2 km from the finish. He only is able to do something like that. Surprising Domingo Perurena goes with him but not for long. Nobody is able to...
Petrus Oellibrandt
How it looked like… 50 years ago! 1962 90 riders will take the start of the race but with a twenty minutes delay as a big traffic jam in so-called ‘konijnenpijp’ made it impossible for riders coming from East and West Flanders to arrive on time in Schoten. André Noyelle, Robert De Middeleir and Pol Rosseel arrived even later and can definitely not start. Peet Oellibrandt is the last one to take place in the bucnh on the start line but today the last shall be first! Peet Oellibrandt and John Van Tongerloo break together in the final; Vic...
Roger DE CORTE
How it looked like… 60 years ago! 1952 It is raining hard at the start. 76 riders are ready to go and all the best Belgian riders are present, with Rik Van Steenbergen in the front row. Just before starting the last local lap, Van Staeyen, from Schoten, is alone in the lead. The gap with the bunch reaches 30’’. Unfortunately he is caught up. In the meantime, Briek Schotte and Rik Van Steenbergen were both the victims of a puncture. They are as a consequence not able to sprint for victory and Roger De Corte wins the event...
Lode BUSSCHOPS
How it looked like… 70 years ago! 1942 It is really not easy to organize the Scheldeprijs during World War II. 37 professional riders are anyway present at the start in Schoten. Most of them come from Antwerp. Jef Somers and Richard Blendeman make part of the first breakers. After the big laps, 26 riders are still together when they reach Schoten. Lucien Acou gives up after he breaks his fork while Martin Van den Broeck and Eugeen Thyssen try to break in the final short lap. No way for them. Lode Busschops is the winner after being the...
Godfried De Vocht
How it looked like… 80 years ago! 1932 55 riders starts the race which goes through Lier and Herentals before finishing with five final laps through Brasschaat. Six riders break at the very beginning of the race: De Vocht, Huys, Verschueren, Vromans, Van Vlockhoven and Gust Verdyck, the local star. This is in fact the breakaway you have to make part of. When the riders are back in Schoten, Van Vlockhoven breaks his handlebars and Fried De Vocht attacks. He is definitely the best and wins his second Scheldeprijs in a row. Result (Tuesday, August 2) 1. Godfried...
Florent Vandenberghe
How it looked like… 90 years ago! 1922 The start is given in Oude-God; the finish takes place for the third and last time on the Garden-City velodrome. Royal Antwerp B.C. is the organizer and happy to welcome 27 riders at the start. Florent Vandenberghe breaks away in the final part of the race and, in spite of strong front wind, he is able to stay alone in the lead and win the race. Result (Sunday, July 9) 1. Florent Vandenberghe, 197 km in 6h35’; 2. Henri Moerenhout; 3.Alfons Van Hecke at 6’16”; 4. Henri Dejaegher; 5. Louis Budts;...
Jef Van Wetter
How it looked like… 100 years ago! 1912 The start of the sixth edition of the Scheldeprijs is given in front of the hospital of Berchem while the finish takes place in Antwerp, on the Handelslei (Trade Avenue). Cycling club ‘De Schelde’ organizes the race and riders making part of the following categories: independent, amateurs and youth are also fighting to try and get the Champion of Antwerp title. The independent category race looks rather like a bike ride than a competition. Riders needed indeed six hours and a half to achieve 170 km (!). Jef Van Wetter, from...
